Using Adhesive Stencils for Fine Detail and Resist Applications in Ceramics

Stickers can be versatile tools in ceramics, allowing fine details in various applications, such as underglazes, and glazes.

Glazes, Underglazes and Sticker Resist for Fine Detail:

One of the most common ways to use sticker stencils in pottery is by incorporating them into the underglazing process. Begin with a bisque-fired/greenware piece and secure the stickers, paint over the entire piece. The stickers act as a resist, preventing the layer of underglaze from adhering to the areas covered by the stickers. Once the underglaze has dried, peel off the stickers to reveal the intricate design beneath.

If you have ordered a more complex sticker from my website you will receive it with premasking tape on the back of the design, which allows you to weed the positive or negative space.

  1. Weed your design and cut it off the full sheet.
  2. Apply premasking tape
  3. Use included card to rub over design so it adheres to premasking tape, I apply a lot of pressure.

  1. Once you have fully rubbed over the design flip it over.
  2. Remove the backing from the sticker to expose the sticky part of the stencil.
  3. This is very important*** when removing the backing fold it over as seen in the photo below and peel in that direction. This is the easiest way to remove the backing. Pre masking tape cannot be too sticky because the stencil still needs to transfer to a new surface. Folding it over this way allows for the stencil to adhere to the premasking tape. If your design isn’t transferring you haven’t rubbed over it enough with the card. If only a few parts are sticking you can use a weeding tool to guide it onto the premasking tape.

Because I love a challenge I apply my stencils to greenware. I don’t recommend this. They stick much better to Bisqueware and the transfer is much easier. BUT, if your like me and like to do everything the hard way, use your thumb to guide the stencil onto the greenware, fold the premasking tape as shown in the photos below.

For Bisqueware use a rib and run over the design before pulling off the premasking tape, it’s much easier than greenware.

Paint to your hearts content and then peel away the sticker with the help of a needle tool

These stickers can be used with glaze and underglaze, bisque and greenware. An Easy fun way to bring detailed images to your ceramics!
